My kids LOVE the satisfaction of crossing off the icons each time we read. Yesterday we were short a bit, and our books were due back, so we spent almost an hour reading on our porch swing outside - enjoying the weather, but slowwwing down. Even when I'm worn our/frustrated by my kids, I always love reading to them as they curl up against me and get fascinated by books.
Have you been to our library? Have you talked to one of the children's librarians? They are FANTASTIC! I go in each week with my kids and say "superheros", "Legos", "Magic School Bus", "Batman", "Superman" (yes, my kiddos are way into super-heros right now), and the librarian finds the greatest books. My kids LOVE what we come home with. I highly suggest using your librarian - don't try to just brainstorm by yourself!
In addition to the reading program, the library has "Lunch on the Lawn" every Tuesday (stories with lunch!), crafts, sign-language classes, and more. Go in and check out their schedule - there is truly something for all ages. And, make sure to stop by their computers....one of my kids' favorite spots - they have many education games loaded, and an entire resource of additional CD-Rom education games back behind the desk if you ask!
