Ramie's Run: 5k fun run/walk to promote healthy children in Grant County (Nove 9th at 10am)

This weekend is a 5k fun run/walk/dog walk at Matter Park in honor of Ramie Harris, who passed away two years ago in a plan crash.  The proceeds from the run go toward promoting health in Grant County children through various means.  It is not too late to sign up for the run - see info below.

Ramie Harris was a young woman who lived a healthy lifestyle. She loved fitness –soccer, running, and many other activities. It was her goal to run a marathon. Ramie was passionate to become a physician and encourage others to be physically and mentally healthy. Ramie also adored animals, including her dog Paisley.

In Ramie’s honor we are planning a 5 K run, fun run/walk and dog walk. “Ramie’s Run” will occur November 9th 2013 at 10 AM in Matter Park in Marion. The proceeds will promote health and wellness for children throughout Grant Count.

Educating All God's Children: Opportunity in Marion Tuesday, November 5th at 5:30pm

We have a fantastic opportunity in Marion this Tuesday, November 5th.  Indiana Wesleyan is hosting an event - an interview with Q&A - with author Nicole Baker Fulgham, who wrote Educating All God's Children: What Christians Can -and Should- Do to Improve Public Education for Low Income Kids

This event is FREE and open to the public.  It is from 7:00pm - 8:00pm at IWU in the Student Center in the Globe Theatre.

For more info, see below.  To register, contact SARA BRADY at  765.677.2437 or sara.brady@indwes.edu.

The School of Teacher Education and the John Wesley Honors College at Indiana Wesleyan University are jointly sponsoring a symposium this coming November featuring author Nicole Baker Fulgham, author of the book, Educating All God’s Children: What Christians Can—and Should—Do to ImprovPublic Education for Low-Income Kids. Jim Wallace, president and CEO of Sojourners, calls Fulgham’s book “A compelling call to a new generation of Christians to fight poverty and injustice through committing themselves to education.”  Jerry Pattengale, IWU assistant provost, wrote that “Educating all God’s Children convincingly shows scriptural mandates for closing the educational gap between low-income areas and wealthier communities.  Apart from Christ and education, most disenfranchised students will never know the abundant life God created them for.”

The Author
Nicole Baker Fulgham is president and founder of The Expectations Project, a national organization that mobilizes people of faith to support public education reform and close the academic achievement gap. She is the former vice president of faith community relations at Teach for America, has appeared on CNN and ABC News, and was named to the list of “50 women to watch: Those Most Shaping the Church and Culture” by Christianity Today.

The symposium is open to IWU students and faculty, and Marion Community Schools teachers and administrators who are concerned about the gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ in American society, and, as Christians, feel a responsibility to do something about it.  Symposium activities include a series of chapter discussions leading up to a banquet, followed by an author interview.  There will be time available for symposium participants to interact with the author in a question-and-answer session.

∙     The symposium banquet is on Tuesday, November 5 in the Barnes Student Center Henry West Banquet Room, beginning at 5:30 p.m.  The author interview begins at 7:00 in the Globe Theater, followed by the Q&A session at 7:30.

Who to Contact; Deadline
Please RSVP your interest in the book discussion series, the banquet, or both to Sara Brady in the Teacher Education Office by email at sara.brady@indwes.edu, or by phone at x2437.

The next Lowe's FREE Kids "Build & Grow" Clinic is this weekend.  To register online, or for more info, click HERE.  My boys love these clinics - they get a patch at the end of each one to put on a free Lowes kid's apron they give out & it is fun to see how many they've done!  (In the spirit of full disclosure, I pin them to the apron as I have zero sewing skills)  :)

Pumpkin Bars...YUMMY!

It's FALL!  My youngest and I went on a field trip with his preschool on Friday to Campbell's Pumpkin Patch.  Lots of fun, and yummy pumpkin bars.  He loved them and asked me to make some at home.  As good as the ones are at Campbell's, I think these may be even better.  :)  Make these, and thank me later.  :)

From the FOOD NETWORK with my minor edits

Pumpkin Bars

Ingredients
4 eggs
1 2/3 cups granulated sugar
1 cup canola oil
15-ounce can pumpkin
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white whole wheat four
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda

Icing:

8-ounce package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
little milk to reach spreadable consistency

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Using an electric mixer at medium speed, combine the eggs, sugar, oil and pumpkin until light and fluffy. Stir together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and baking soda. Add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture and mix at low speed until thoroughly combined and the batter is smooth. Spread the batter into a greased 15 by 10-inch baking sheet. Bake for 28 minutes. Let cool completely before frosting. Cut into bars.

To make the icing: Combine the cream cheese and butter in a medium bowl with an electric mixer until smooth. Add the sugar and mix at low speed until combined. Stir in the vanilla and mix again. Spread on cooled pumpkin bars.
