Weekly Wednesday Words - Leigh McLeroy Encourages & Refreshes

My former Sunday School teacher & friend, Leigh McLeroy, is a prolific author & inspires me with her "Wednesday Words".  In addition to writing books & being on a speaking circuit, she writes a weekly email/blog called Wednesday Words, which you can sign up for (for free - CLICK HERE to sign up) and have emailed right to your inbox.  I wish you could all meet Leigh like I have, and you would hear her sweet, kind & gentle voice in all of her posts, but without even knowing her you can and will be blessed by her weekly email.  She is so REAL and every week reminds me just of what I need to hear... funny how the Lord works like that!  I encourage you to sign up and be encouraged by her.  See this week's email below.   - Kristi

Of grackles and grace

May 25, 2011

grackleA sleek, golden-eyed blackbird scurried in front of my car as I pulled into the drive, hustling out of harm's way with iridescent wings flapping furiously.  We "missed" each other, but not by much. "Why don't you fly, you silly old thing?" I wondered. Flying would be so much simpler and more efficient than the awkward, evasive movement he employed. I mean, the bird had a pair of shimmering wings for a reason!

He reminded me of me.

Of the bluster and "flapping about" I do on a rather regular basis to try and keep safe from the threat of sin and live a life worthy of Christ. As if I could do that for myself!

"Morality," said C. S. Lewis,  "is a mountain which we cannot climb by our own efforts; and if we could we should only perish in the ice and unbreathable air of the summit, lacking those wings with which the rest of the journey has to be accomplished. For it is from there that the real ascent begins. The ropes and axes are "done away" and the rest is a matter of flying."

My grackle-friend was made to fly...to be gracefully airborne, not nervously earth-bound. He had within him the stuff he needed to ride the cool lift of a current of air. So it's easy for me to see (and to say) that he should have been using it.

But it's harder to understand that in the same way, I have what I need to live the Christ-life in the person and power of Christ himself. Yet instead of relying on him to get me where I long to go, I pull out the "ropes and axes" of self-effort as if to drag myself along to glory by the agonizing, ugly inch.

When, oh when, will I learn for good that the grace that saved me is the grace that sustains me, and will indeed become the very "grace that leads me home."

Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing--if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard? (Galatians 3-5 NIV)

Help Clean-Up Downtown & Historic Marion - June 4

My husband teases me because I'm always an advocate for "clean-up" days (my solution to most problems when we drive through small communities!).  We did these in the town I grew up in, and they were GREAT community events - a chance to take pride in your city, to bond as a community & instill positive values in your kids!

The Downtown & Historic Marion Neighborhood Association is hosting a clean-up day on Saturday, June 4.  The clean-up event is 8:30 - noon (rain or shine!), and volunteers are needed to clean, paint & more.  They're asking people to pre-register if possible so they know how many to expect.  For more info & to register contact operations@mainstreetmarion.com or #662-1192.  They'll also take registrations at 8am the day of the event at the Centrum Mall (428 S. Washington St).

Old Navy $1 Flip Flops - Saturday, May 21

Many of you know that each summer Old Navy offers a 1-day sale on their flip flops - $1/pair.  That day is this Saturday, May 21, from 7am - 9pm.  I don't want to promote the ridiculousness that this sale can be, which is obsessive buying for the sake of buying, but I do want to bring it to your attention in case you need a pair of flip flops for the summer.  I warn you, if you haven't been to this sale before, people are are little crazy about it, and just about every single pair of flip flops in the store sells out on this day (usually within an hour or two), so go early if you're looking for this deal.

Limit 5 per customer. In-Store only.

Midwest Coffee Roasters - OPEN!

Midwest Coffee Roasters had their soft opening last weekend, and they are open!  I stopped by tonight to check them out and the place looks amazing - they've done a fantastic job with it!  They will be open all day this Thurs & Fri, starting at 8am and going until (maybe 9pm)???  Their hours are not set until their grand opening, which they're hoping is the beginning of June.

If you don't know about Midwest Coffee Roasting Company, they are a local roaster, and have been in the process of opening up a coffee shop/retail spot in Marion on Spencer right near the Bypass.  It looks like a little white house, and if the sign in the window says OPEN, you should stop in!  They feature organic coffee & baked goods with no artificial colors/sweeteners/flavors or hydrogenated oils.  They have free Wi-Fi, and will have a moms/toddler room with a gate for moms to meet for a cup of coffee/play date.  This place is JUST what Marion needs, and I'm super excited about it.  I think when you see it you'll love it too!

Main Street Marion's First Friday Festivals - staring this week!

Have you been to these "First Friday" events in downtown Marion yet?  I've heard of them, but have yet to go to one due to either always being out of town, or just totally forgetting about them until the day after!  I'm determined to get to them this summer, starting with the first one of the season this Friday!

Main Street Marion’s First Friday - starting this Fri 5/6/1, from 6pm - 9pm in downtown Marion

Hosted by Main Street Marion, featuring live entertainment, food, children’s activities, clowns, crafts.  Join the fun at the Riverfront District.  Contact Main Street Marion for additional information at 765-662-1192.

These events last all summer long - the first Friday of every month, May through September.  They're supposed to be a lot of fun - vendors/organizations from all over the area.  Should be a fun community event - hope to see you there!
